Daphne Yarram
Indigenous Leadership Fellow 2006 - 2011
Biography
Daphne Yarram was awarded her Indigenous Leadership Fellowship in 2006. Daphne comes from sale in Gippsland, Victoria. For the last 24 years Daphne has worked for the Victorian Indigenous community in a range of positions including voluntary, government and private sector.
These have included being the Chairperson for ATSIC Binjirru regional council – which highlighted to her that there is still a long way to go to have unity within Australia for Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.
Other organisations Daphne has supported, helped establish and worked with are the Victorian Indigenous Leadership Network, Sale Aboriginal Education Consultative Group, Gippsland Aboriginal Justice Advisory Committee, Premiers Aboriginal Advisory Council, East Gippsland Indigenous Family Violence Regional Action Group and the Indigenous Family Violence Partnership Forum and working to establish a Indigenous family Violence healing service/centre for East Gippsland.
Daphne has a particular passion to develop programs to support Indigenous children, young people and women, to build self esteem, confidence and support them to reclaim, embrace and understand and be proud of their cultural identity. Currently Daphne is also involved in establishing a Victorian Indigenous Leadership Centre and a regional Indigenous Women's network in Gippsland. She is also working on projects such as:
- creative Koorie kids
- cultural connection "You-Me-Us"
- rights of passage project for
Indigenous youth and young men
- Women's circle
- and an Indigenous professional Women's 'Yarning circle'
