The Fellowship for Indigenous Leadership fosters Indigenous leadership, providing exceptional people with the support they need to achieve their vision for their communities.
The Fellowship provides support to recognised leaders and opportunities to emerging leaders within Victoria's Indigenous communities. Building Indigenous leadership is a vital way of improving the social and emotional well-being of communities, and the Fellowship helps Indigenous communities to develop innovative responses to current issues and future challenges.
The Fellowship supports indigenous leaders, past, present and future, striving to achieve positive change for Indigenous Victorians and strengthening links between Indigenous and mainstream Australia.
What is an Emerging Leader?
An Emerging Leader is someone who is at the beginning of their journey.They have recognised leadership skills and are ready to further develop their opportunities both personally and professionally. Their present focus is on a singular project or plan in an already recognised area of work.

Applications should be received by close of business on Tuesday, 13thMarch, 2012.
All applications received are sent an acknowledgement.
An independent Selection Panel, comprising both Indigenous and non-Indigenous members of high standing in community, business and leadership roles, reviews all applications and shortlists applicants for interview so that the panelists can learn more about the applicants' vision for the future and how they would use the Emerging Leadership Award to make a difference.
We will offer the opportunity for shortlisted applicants to meet with a previous recipient of the Fellowship for Indigenous Leadership Program to help prepare them for their interview.
Following the interviews, the Selection Panel then makes its recommendation to the Advisory Committee of the Fellowship for Indigenous Leadership which is responsible for the final decision.
Interviews will take place in Melbourne in March and followed by an announcement function in April 2012.
The Emerging Leadership program aims to support exceptional people develop their leadership potential and set them on the path for their vision for their community becoming a reality.
Those taking part in the program will have access to mentoring,professional and personal development and the opportunity to improve their leadership skills as well as a $30,000 grant over a period of 12 months to assist with:
- The development of identified personal and professional development goals.
- Planning and implementing a project that will benefit their community.
Applicants should have identified goals / objectives within a specific identified sector (i.e., arts, community, business, environment, education, health,media, sport etc) with knowledge of the required resources to implement and achieve the goals / objectives.
Requirements for Application
Applicants are asked to:
- Complete the Application Form.
- Address the selection criteria below and provide an outline for a12 month project that has a specific vision, idea or plan for a project in your local Indigenous community or statewide that would demonstrate / foster leadership within the community.
- The project plan should include any development of personal and professional skills, aims of your specific project, activities that will help you achieve your objectives, draft timeline and proposed budget.
Selection Criteria – Emerging Leader
The Selection Panel will be looking for evidence of:
- Commitment to achievement and an understanding of leadership.
- Skill and ability to undertake and complete projects.
- Ability to contribute to strengthening leadership within Victoria's Aboriginal community.
- A commitment to promoting and strengthening Victoria's Aboriginal culture.
- A strong base within the Victoria's Aboriginal community evidenced by demonstrated relationships with already established Indigenous organisations, communities and projects.
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong and fruitful relationships and networks with individuals, groups and organisations in the Victorian Aboriginal and non Aboriginal communities.
- The desire to share knowledge and experience and to work to increase the understanding and skills of others including the ability to work as part of a team and foster teamwork.
- Applicants must be Indigenous and currently living in Victoria - Fellowship projects must benefit Indigenous Victoria.
